This document provides an update to the original Gambia country diagnostic that was produced in 2021.
In general, there have been a few major structural changes to the Gambia remittance market in the last two years. The volume of remittances flowing into Gambia has dipped slightly according to the Central Bank of Gambia (CBG), but has increased a bit according to the World Bank. CBG did not provide corridor level data, but the US remains the top sending corridor. Informal flows are still popular for transactions with bordering countries and have also resurfaced from their dip during lockdown.
There have been significant regulatory changes and more underway. Most notable is the ability for mobile money operators to send and receive international remittances.
